What is Myofascial Treatment

Myofascial Release is a full-body, hands-on technique that focuses on releasing restrictions that are causing pain and dysfunction. So, the first thing that the therapist will need to determine is where you have restrictions. This is done by looking at your posture while you are standing and then also by feeling for the restrictions on your body.

Then the therapist will treat the areas of the body where the most significant restrictions are located. Each treatment may target different areas depending on where you are most restricted on that day. The treatment consists of engaging the barrier of a restriction, then allowing the restriction to release. The barrier is the point at which the fascial restriction is in a lengthened or slightly stretched position. This is different then the end range of motion; it's more like taking the slack out of the system.

Once the restriction is at the barrier, it then needs to be held for a minimum of 90-120 seconds before it STARTS to release. For a good release to occur, the restriction needs to be held at the barrier at least two to five minutes. If the therapist releases before this time, then they are not doing authentic JFB-MFR, and they are not allowing the tissue to make a permanent change. They are only providing temporary relief.

The treatment will range from very specific and localized soft tissue work to arm pulls, leg pulls or other stretches that incorporate the entire body. The treatment can focus on a specific area like the neck or low back, or it may incorporate the entire body. The places treated will depend on where the restrictions are located and how they are connected throughout the body.

True JFB-MFR is not forceful. The body is allowed to release, not forced to release. This does not mean that the releases will not be painful. Many times during a release, pain and/or many other sensations will be felt, but you will always feel your body softening. The following are treatment guidelines.

  • Look at and treat the entire body.
  • Engage the barrier; do not force though the barrier.
  • Hold for at least two to five minutes to allow for a true release to occur

During treatments, you will also be shown how to treat yourself. That way you will have the tools to help keep yourself healthy. So, if you are looking for true, authentic healing then you have come to the right place!

What Should I Wear for a Treatment?

Since MFR is a whole-body treatment, it will be necessary to be able to treat the entire body. Most people either get treated in a pair of shorts and tank top, or in their undergarments. There are also paper gowns available to wear during the treatments if needed.

Please avoid putting on lotions prior to a treatment as the lotions make it difficult to hold the release long enough.
